Editor's note & your letters
Just put your mobile phone away
Walking along Richmond Road in the morning, I notice the sheer number of people driving either blatantly talking on their phone with it held to their ear or trying, but failing miserably, to text discreetly. Despite several safety campaigns and messages, motorists don’t seem to understand how dangerous driver distraction can be. The stats are staggering. In the first month of mobile phone detection cameras being active, more than 30,000 motorists were caught using their phone while driving. We look at why you need to put your mobile away when you’re driving, riding a bike or even walking along the street.
We’ve had so much positive feedback about our quizzes, that we’re once again testing your road-rules knowledge. This edition, we’re heading out bush to see how well you handle country roads.
Speaking of country driving, there’s nothing like a road trip when the weather starts getting warmer. Visit the Limestone Coast and take in ancient caves and volcanoes, see a giant lobster, drive along rugged coastlines and choose from 42 flavours of ice cream in Robe. With footy finals just around the corner, a weekend in Melbourne might be on the cards, so we’ve compiled a jam-packed itinerary to keep you busy.

My first blood donation
I refer to the article, ‘Milestone blood donation for Richard’ in the last edition of sa move. Reading, I was reminded of my very first donation more than 50 years ago.
Having enrolled as a donor in my early 20s, I received an urgent telephone call from the Port Lincoln Hospital inviting me to drop in and donate a pint of blood for a lady in labour. So, I promptly responded, and the mother gave birth.
Since then, I have regularly donated and have no hesitation in endorsing Richard’s call for any prospective donors to “just do it”.

How my ride improved my wellbeing
Every morning, I head to university, riding my 1986 Honda NV400SP down the South Eastern Freeway. The cold 6am rides during winter are particularly challenging, but they also offer a unique sense of adventure and resilience building.
There’s something incredibly rewarding about these morning rides. The dawn’s stillness, the engine’s rhythmic hum, and the sense of freedom all contribute to a profound sense of fulfilment. As a member of RAA, riding a classic bike down the freeway doesn’t stress me out. I know that if I breakdown, help is only a call away.

Lesser-known SA towns
The sa move magazine rightly focuses on top tourist locations in South Australia. However, I wondered if sa move could promote the clusters of small towns which travellers may pass through on the way to popular SA locations.
For example, on the way to the Flinders Ranges there’s Crystal Brook, Laura and Wirrabara. Each of these towns offers its own unique attractions and know that any help in drawing tourists to the area would be appreciated.

sa move editor: Hi, thanks for your letter. We recently started a regular feature ‘A day in…’ to highlight some lesser-known SA destinations. This edition, we’re showcasing Normanville.
