Am I insured?
Most of us know that if we have home insurance, it usually covers a variety of major events that may impact our homes, but there are things you probably don’t know you’re insured for.
Your home burns down – what do you do? You contact your insurer. If you break a window, you might make an insurance claim. You may be insured for these incidents, but what about lesser-known claims?
Motor burnout
If you have a household item like a fridge, freezer or washing machine, it might be covered by contents insurance if the motor burns out or fuses during the term of your policy. Some insurers, including RAA, may cover replacing or repairing the household item if it’s less than 10 years since the product was manufactured. So, next time the motor burns out in your white goods, it might be worth checking if your insurer covers motor burnouts before replacing it.
Broken glass
If you accidentally smash a window in your house, you might make an insurance claim. However, RAA Home and Contents Insurance covers accidental breakage of other glass fixtures in your home as well. This includes shower screens, glass in paintings, mirrors designed to be hung from a wall and even aquariums if they’re accidentally broken.
Moving home
Moving house can be a stressful time. It’s more than just packing your household goods and moving them to another place. Among other tasks, you usually need to organise paperwork, transfer utilities and redirect mail – that’s a lot to remember. So, it’s good to know RAA insurance may cover your contents from the date you start moving out of your old address and for up to 14 days at your new address. Refer to the PDS for full details. This will give you a little extra time to get insurance sorted at your new address.
Temporary accommodation
Ever wonder what you’d do if your home was unfit to live in after a major insured event? Are you concerned you may have to impose on family or friends or fork out for a rental while your home is being repaired? RAA Home and Contents Insurance may cover the cost of temporary accommodation for up to 12 months, with a limit of up to 10 per cent of your sum insured, until repairs are complete and your home is fit to live in.
Lock replacement
Lost your keys or had them stolen and reported the incident to police? This can be a stressful situation, particularly if they’re stolen or lost with something that reveals your address. RAA Home and Contents Insurance may cover up to $1000 to re-key or replace the lock in these situations.
