Fine or fined?

When driving, there are hundreds of rules we follow daily, but then there are others that aren’t so straightforward. This edition, we quiz you on some lesser-known road rules that you might be breaking without realising. So, before answering each question, ask yourself, “is this fine or could I be fined?”

1. It’s a warm summer evening and you’re driving with your window down. You have your arm resting on the window frame and hand on the side of the car. Can you be fined?

2. You’re going to the beach and as you run out the door, you put on your thongs before jumping behind the wheel. Are you breaking the law wearing thongs while you’re driving?

3. You’re in the city and need to get from Rundle Street to West Terrace quickly. You jump on an e-scooter for the first time. Where can you ride a hired e-scooter?

A. In the traffic lanes

B. On the footpath

C. In the bike lane

D. All of the above

4. Can you perform a U-turn at the traffic lights?

A. Yes, unless there’s a ‘no U-turn’ sign

C. Yes, but only when there’s a sign permitting the manoeuvre

5. You’ve picked up a burger, fries and soft drink from the local takeaway shop. The drink is resting between your legs and you’re snacking on some fries as you drive home. Can you be fined for eating while driving?

6. In which of the below examples is it okay to enter an intersection when there’s a red light?

B. When you're running late for work

C. When there’s an emergency services vehicle trying to get through

D. When there isn’t a red-light camera

7. Can motorcyclists lane filter (drive between cars stopped at traffic lights)?
