HOW TO: replace windscreen wipers

Effective windscreen wipers are crucial for driver visibility, but as they age they can crack, split, or leave streaks on the glass. Often, you can replace the entire wiper arm assembly, rather than just the rubber inserts – and it’s a quick, do-it-yourself job.

1. Get the right wipers for the job

Windscreens come in various shapes and sizes, so it's important to buy wiper blades that fit your car's make and model. Many auto parts retailers include a handy feature on their website, where you can enter your car's registration number and find a list of suitable blades. If you get stuck, check the owner's manual for your vehicle or head into your local auto parts store for advice..

2. Out with the old

When removing the old wiper blades, you'll probably find a clip and hook that hold the assembly in place. First, pull the clip, then lift the wiper arm until it stays up. Place a folded towel or cloth on the windscreen where the wiper arm sits. That way, if the spring-loaded arm bounces back, it's less likely to crack or chip your windscreen. Pull the wiper blade down and pivot it until you can remove the part and carefully lay the arm on the towel. Repeat this process for the other side and you're ready to install the new wiper blades.

3. In with the new

1. On some cars, the driver's side and passenger's side wiper blades are different lengths. Before you attach the new parts, measure them against the ones you've removed to make sure each is on the correct side. Once measured, get the new wiper arm and pull it into place until it's sitting properly on the hook. Next, carefully lower the arm onto the windscreen and push the clip back down, then install the new wiper arm on the other side.

4. Testing, testing

Before testing your new wiper blades, make sure there's enough water in the reservoir under the bonnet. If not, fill it to the maximum line. Jump into the driver's seat, squirt plenty of water onto the windscreen and turn on the wipers. Make sure the blades are clearing the water away completely and aren't skipping or leaving streaks. Pat yourself on the back for a job well done. You're ready to see better and be safer on the road the next time it rains.
