Our resilient regional communities

Our resilient regional communities south Australians have experienced many challenges in the past few years, including disastrous bushfires in 2020 and then the COVID-19 pandemic. More recently, our farmers are enduring a widespread drought. Then in early 2025, an algal bloom hit our coastal regions. We speak to country South Australians about how they’ve been impacted by the drought and algal bloom.

With summer around the corner and more people hitting the road, whether it’s around home or on road trips, it’s time to brush up on your road-rules knowledge. We look at lines you encounter on the road and what they mean. You might be surprised how important they are when it comes to safety.

Driver distraction, speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, dangerous driving, and not wearing a seatbelt are the fatal five causes of road trauma.

Do you know how much your risk of having a crash increases when you’re talking on your phone hands-free? Find out the answer in our fatal five quiz.

Despite the algal bloom, South Australia's coastal regions are still open for business. Kangaroo Island is a great place for a getaway. Visit the island’s best beaches, taste the food and drink it has to offer, and admire the sea life.

Air New Zealand now offers direct flights between Adelaide and Christchurch, so to celebrate we’re featuring the South Island. From alpine forests in the north and fiords in the south, there’s plenty to see and do. So, say kia ora to New Zealand this summer.

Patience pays off

On a recent drive back from the Adelaide Hills, I had a moment that reminded me why patience

matters on the road. I was following a learner driver who was nervously tackling a steep descent. Instead of overtaking, I decided to hang back and give them space.

A few kilometres later, I saw the same car pull into a service station. The young driver gave me a grateful wave as I passed. It struck me how small acts of patience can ease someone else’s stress and even encourage them to become a safer driver.

In a world where everyone seems to be in a hurry, perhaps the best driving lesson we can remind ourselves of is simply to slow down – not just with our cars, but with each other.

Camouflaged cars?

I’ve been wanting to write to RAA for some time about the certain colour of some vehicles. I’m a rural person and have a fair bit of age on me now. The only times I’ve almost been involved in an accident have been when the colours of vehicles have blended in with either the road surface or native vegetation.

The position of the sun makes this even trickier at certain times. I’m not sure what can be done. Maybe these colours can be made unfashionable, or a large stripe should be painted on these cars. A law requiring lights to be on always might help because this is a very real problem, particularly in rural areas.

My BioBag brekky bin

Thank you for mailing your latest magazine in a BioBag. The bag is useful to keep in the car for those times I might grab an apple or banana for breakfast and need a bin. SA is leading the way with our plastic ban, and it’s good to see other SA businesses looking at ways we can remove plastic from our everyday lives.
