Editor's note & your letters

Two months ago, I’d never visited the northern reaches of Australia nor been on a cruise.

That all changed in March when I was given the opportunity to visit the Kimberley in north-west Australia.

The 12-day cruise around the Kimberley region included stops at Rowley Shoals and Ashmore Reef where I spent time snorkelling.

The remoteness of the Kimberley makes this area feel like it’s untouched by the outside world. Wildlife abounds, crocs sit just beneath the water’s surface swimming in a wave-like motion, and if you’re a twitcher, you’ll be in for a treat with birds around every corner. Read more about the Kimberley here.

From the beautiful Kimberley to the bright lights of Singapore, this edition we also visit this South East Asian metropolis.

It might be a bustling city known as a stopover on the way to Europe, but it has so much more to offer. Visit an outdoor hawker centre for chilli crab or maybe indulge in high tea and a Singapore Sling cocktail at the famous Raffles. If you’re a motorsport fan, visit in October for the Singapore F1 Grand Prix.

We have plenty of motoring content this edition as well. Whether it’s discussing driving with a teenager or telling an older relative it might be time to hang up their car keys, conversations about safe driving can be tricky to navigate. We chat to four people who’ve had these tough road safety conversations.

If you’re looking for a new car, check out our road test. This edition, we’ve reviewed three new vehicles, including the GWM Cannon. We know you love our road-rules quizzes, so we’ve scoured through past results to compile the trickiest questions and create our hardest quiz yet. Test your knowledge.

Do you enjoy reading sa move? If you don’t want to wait for the magazine each quarter, we have lots of other great content at samove.raa.com.au. Brush up on your road-rules knowledge, be inspired by travel stories or get car advice, all in the one location.

Happy reading.

Quizzes a fave

My favourite section of sa move magazine is the quiz questions. Even though I’ve been driving for more than 40 years, I often come across a question that stumps me or I must think hard about. Maybe us older drivers should take theory tests every so often to keep on top of road rules that change over time.

The article ‘Around the twist’ in the autumn edition illustrates this, with many drivers not knowing they should indicate when leaving a roundabout. I’ve noticed that many motorists don’t comply with this requirement and some drivers are not confident about roundabouts in general. Thank you RAA for helping us all to do better.

Clearer hazard lights required

As a bus driver, I’ve come across an issue that I believe could easily be remedied.

When vehicles line up in a row on the side of the road with hazard lights on, passing vehicles can only see the right-hand indicator light. As a result, they can’t determine if it’s an indicator light (meaning the vehicle may move away from the kerb) or a hazard light.

My idea is to change the hazard light to a double-blink pattern, so it’s easy to differentiate between a hazard light and indicator light. Such a simple change could potentially clear up many confusing situations on the road.

Ducks in a row

These ducks didn’t make it to Italy, so settled for the ‘pond’ at Henley Square to the delight of the young ones. Congratulations to the winner of the promotional trip to Italy!
